Step 1 of 3
Take your photo
Upload a selfie or use your camera with our framing guide. We'll check u.s. passport requirements line by line — for free.
- Step 1
Find even, natural light
Face a window or a soft lamp so light hits your face from the front, not from above or behind.
- No harsh shadows on your face, neck, or background
- Avoid backlight — never stand with a window behind you
- Turn off colored or tinted bulbs
- Step 2
Use a plain, light background
Stand 30–50 cm (1–1.5 ft) in front of a smooth white or off‑white wall.
- No patterns, posters, doors, or furniture in frame
- Keep distance from the wall to avoid shadow lines
- Don't worry if it isn't perfect — we can flatten it for you
- Step 3
Dress for everyday
Wear normal clothes in a color that contrasts with the background.
- No uniforms or camouflage
- Avoid pure white tops against a white wall
- Remove hats and head coverings unless worn daily for religious reasons
- Step 4
Remove glasses & accessories
Glasses are not allowed in U.S. passport photos. Take off sunglasses, headphones, and large jewelry.
- Push hair behind ears so your full face is visible
- No earbuds, AirPods, or headbands
- Pull hair back from forehead and cheeks
- Step 5
Frame head and shoulders
Hold the phone at eye level, about an arm's length away. Center your face with a little space above your head.
- Keep the camera level — don't tilt up or down
- Both shoulders should be visible
- Look straight into the lens
- Step 6
Neutral expression, eyes open
Relax your face, close your mouth, and look directly at the camera.
- Mouth closed, no big smile or frown
- Eyes fully open and clearly visible
- Head straight — not tilted left, right, up, or down
